In 2010, Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the Cancun Adaptation Framework, which called on all countries to take “measures to enhance understanding, coordination and cooperation with regard to climate change induced displacement, migration and planned relocation, where appropriate, at national, regional and international levels.” In 2015, the UNFCCC adopted further language, establishing a taskforce to address the displacement consequences of climate change.

About the Climate Vulnerable Forum

The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) is an international partnership of countries highly vulnerable to a warming planet. The Forum serves as a South-South cooperation platform for participating governments to act together to deal with global climate change.

Background

Building on existing knowledge, data and case studies produced over the years by IOM, other international organizations, academia and researchers worldwide, the project will result in the first Atlas of Environmental Migration, an innovative tool providing a visual overview of this trend of human migration through maps, illustrations and explanatory texts prepared under the supervision of world experts in this field.

The overall goal of the project is to increase the protection of Pacific Islanders who are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change displacement. The project purpose (specific goal) is to improve the capacity of PIC’s to better plan and manage the impacts of climate change on migration.
