In the Pacific Islands, the impacts of climate change join persistent human development challenges as inter-linked factors that threaten human well-being. This project aims to investigate the potential for diverse forms of human mobility to provide solutions to the new nexus of adaptation and development challenges. Policy analysis and in-depth case study research, conducted across five countries (Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Australia), aims to inform the creation of a conceptual framework that integrates mobility with climate change adaptation and development goals, policy and practice. This should provide significant contributions to shaping more sustainable futures for people displaced, relocated or migrating in the face of climate change across the region.

This project is an innovative response to international policy commitments to address the environmental drivers of migration, such as those made in the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular migration (GCM) in 2018, and international commitments made by EU and African States at the Valletta Summit on migration (2015), to “improve cooperation on return and sustainable reintegration.” This project also supports the implementation of the recommendations of the Nansen Initiative Protection Agenda and the work of the Platform on Disaster Displacement.

 The European Union-funded “Migration, Environment and Climate Change: Evidence for Policy” (MECLEP) project was implemented between January 2014 and March 2017.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is implementing a project on "Assessing the Migration, Climate Change and Conflict Dimension in the Lake Chad region", covering Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria. The objective of the project is to strengthen the evidence on climate-related migration in the Lake Chad Basin and its impacts on livelihoods, so as to inform governmental and humanitarian policies and action.
