Since IDMC began collecting data on displacement associated with disasters in 2008, natural hazards have triggered approximately 265 million new displacements, more than three times as many forced movements as those caused by conflict and violence.
The IOM Glossary on Migration is an accessible and extensive collection of definitions of migration-related terminology. It is designed for a broad range of actors engaging with migration at the international level. It also provides some insights on regional and national practices.
In 2015, IOM committed to bring the question of human mobility to the climate negotiation process, currently conducted within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This document outlines IOM’s contributions to the UNFCCC process since 2008 and presents the Organization’s actions to support the UNFCCC process in the “Year of Climate – 2015”.
The Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) aims at following up on the work started by the Nansen Initiative in 2012 and to implement the recommendations of the Nansen Initiative Protection Agenda, endorsed by more than 100 governmental delegations during a Global Consultation in October 2015.
Internal displacement associated with slow-onset environmental change and disasters is a complex and dynamic phenomenon. Often hard to distinguish from internal migration, displacement driven by gradually evolving environmental change is primarily a development issue.
