Climate Change

HOTSPOT AFRICA - GP Conference “Climate Change and Migration: Point of No Return?! An African Perspective”

In a digital conference we want to analyze the situation, trends and forecasts for Sub-Saharan Africa: What needs to be done to reduce the effects of climate change for people, how to strengthen their resilience? Aiming at putting attention on the needs of migrants as well as the people left behind, we want to discuss efforts in Africa and Europe’s agenda in the cooperation with Africa in order to support an exchange for a holistic and humanitarian strategy on climate change induced migration.

Global policy debates, mobility and natural hazards

How is the issue of human mobility in the context of disasters, environmental degradation and climate change treated in the global policy debate (including the Global Compacts for Migration and on Refugees, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC and the Task Force on Displacement)?

Moderator: Nina Birkeland, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)

Speakers:

Climate Change and Human Mobility

Climate change and its impact on vulnerable populations are too significant for any one actor to solve alone; private-public partnerships are essential to meet this global challenge.

This event aims  to foster collaboration across UN agencies,  research institutions,  philanthropic organizations, and the private sector to lay the foundation for a healthy, more resilient future for all.

Webinar: Evidence vs Myth – Understanding Displacement in a Changing Climate

The webinar featured a prominent panel of experts who help to provide evidence that debunks common and dangerous myths surrounding climate change and displacement. From the idea that displacement linked with disasters is temporary, to the claim that disasters are natural and therefore displacement unavoidable, all the way to the belief that climate change will result in “mass displacement”, this online webinar touched on a broad range of topics.

In 2018, 17.2 million people were internally displaced as a result of natural disasters (IDMC 2019). Just one year later, in 2019, 24.9 million people were displaced due to natural disasters and extreme weather events (IDMC 2020). The catastrophic effects of climate change are no longer isolated emergencies, but have become the new global norm- a reality that is only intensifying each year.
