Workshop on Planned Relocations, Disasters and Climate Change
In 2010, the Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change recognized that mobility may be an adaptation strategy for climate change and called for further work on displacement, migration and planned relocations. Although there has been considerable work on displacement and migration, much less is known about planned relocations and yet there is a clear need for integrated approaches to address planned relocations as a protection strategy in response to the adverse effects of climate change.
For the past few years Georgetown University, the International Organization for Migration, and UNHCR, in collaboration with UN University and the World Bank, have been working together to develop Guidance and operational tools to support States and other actors on Planned Relocation as a way of protecting people from disasters and the effects of environmental change, including climate change.
The workshop will provide a general overview of work being done on Planned Relocations and an opportunity to hear about States’ experiences and gather inputs from States on the issue of planned relocations. A more technical afternoon session will provide an opportunity for States and other stakeholders to provide more detailed comments on a draft Toolkit on Planned Relocations.
Participation by invitation only
The workshop is jointly organized by Georgetown University, the International Organization for Migration, and UNHCR, in collaboration with UN University and the World Bank.
