World Environment Day 2018

On World Environment Day 5th May 2018, IOM added its voice to the global effort to beat plastic pollution and protect the environment.

Single-use or disposable plastic has become one of the greatest challenges to our natural environment; up to 13 million tons of this plastic also leak into our oceans each year. It is even estimated that by 2050, there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Such waste on this scale threatens marine life, ecosystems, and our health as it enters our drinking supply and food chain.

IOM recognizes that a healthy environment is intrinsically linked to the well-being and resilience of migrants and their host communities. “If we invest in protecting our environment today, we can reduce the risks of displacement due to climate change and environmental degradation for future generations,” said Dina Ionesco, Head of IOM’s Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) Division.

In support of this important recognition, IOM launched a diverse stream of media activities including a Press Release, Shorthands and articles, videos, and a variety social media content. On social media alone, IOM made over 82,900 impressions on Twitter, 15,500 on Instagram and 40,500 on LinkedIn where our videos were watched over 14,000 times!
