Jun 10, 2020 - Event

IOM holds its second Civil Society Information Sharing Session on 10 June 2020 on the topic of Migration, Environment and Climate Change: Implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. In collaboration with IOM’s Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) Division, the International Partnerships Division invited civil society to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the migration, environment and climate change nexus. At the same time, the MECC Division will present the development process of the IOM Institutional Strategy on Migration, Environment and Climate Change.

The session will be opened by IOM Director-General, Mr António Vitorino, followed by interventions from the IOM’s Head of Partnerships Division, Mrs Nicoletta Giordano and the MECC Division Head, Mrs Dina Ionesco.

Civil society representatives, Alex Randall, Programme Manager at Climate Change and Migration Coalition, and Christian Wolff, Programme Manager for Migration and Displacement at Act Alliance will compliment the discussion.

The discussion will be guided by the following three main questions:

  • What impact does COVID-19 have on the migration, environment and climate change nexus?
  • How can we “build back better” and include climate and migration dimensions in recovery efforts in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis?
  • How can partnerships between Civil Society and IOM help seize available opportunities post-COVID-19
