The Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI) is a joint undertaking of the African Union Commission, the United Nations and the World Bank to support the African continent in addressing climate-forced displacement and migration while harnessing climate mobility to advance its development agenda and further its economic & political integration. Launched in September 2021, the ACMI's people-centered & evidence-based approach aims to generate political momentum, a common policy agenda, and resources to advance comprehensive and locally anchored solutions for climate mobility.
Leading up to COP27, the ACMI is advancing its objectives through the preparation of a comprehensive Report and Agenda for Action entitled “Shaping the Future of Mobility in Africa: Addressing Climate-Forced Displacement & Migration.” The Report draws on cutting-edge modeling of climate-forced mobility scenarios for the African continent, as well as primary data collection and field research among affected populations and communities in seven African locations. Since December 2021, the ACMI has engaged a diverse group of African and global experts and practitioners in a series of Consultations to develop a shared analysis of the modeling results and research findings and directions for policy and action by different levels of government and constituencies in the continent. Through the process of stakeholder engagement, the ACMI is building a continent-wide Community of Practice, including dedicated forums for Youth, Women, Knowledge, Partnerships and Cities. By supporting these key constituencies in the continent, the ACMI seeks to create an eco-system of change agents that can drive knowledge generation, advocacy and the implementation of the Agenda for Action beyond COP27.
The ACMI Stakeholders Forum marks a key milestone in the process leading up to COP27. It will bring together ACMI’s partners, stakeholders and representatives of the key constituencies it seeks to support through the Community of Practice. The outcomes of the Summit will inform the drafting and finalization of the Report and Agenda for Action, as well as planned advocacy and announcements as well as the launch of various pilot projects to be made before and at COP, where the ACMI plans to host a dedicated Climate Mobility pavilion.
