A Future without Displacement - Improving Understanding, Supporting Innovation and Catalysing Local Action to Avert Climate-Induced Displacement
This side event, convened by IOM, delves into the challenge of displacement in the context of climate change. By bringing together political leaders and scientists, IOM aims to foster an improved understanding of the complex interplay of factors contributing to displacement risk, including environmental, economic, political, social, and demographic. This improved understanding can inform action to build resilience, improve preparedness, and avert, minimize and address displacement.
The event will also preview the proposed post-COP technical dialogue convened by the Government of the Philippines and IOM, focusing on averting displacement, and its linkage with loss and damage.
High-level speakers from governments, UN and other partners, and prominent scientists and experts working on the frontlines of climate change and displacement, will discuss the global landscape of displacement risk, underscoring the importance of evidence-based approaches to inform local action, and the importance of partnerships and innovation.
The event will continue with a case study, namely the Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD) and the Climate Catalytic Fund (CCF) in Asia and the Pacific. RICD and CCF are being developed via a co-creation mechanism, convened by IOM, including over 30 scientists and other experts. This approach has significant potential to improve data on displacement risk and catalyse local action. Several experts involved in this mechanism will participate in a panel discussion. This case study will also highlight the importance of IOM’s innovative work in the climate space, most notably the Climate Mobility Innovation Lab (CMIL) which is envisioned to have a broad coordinating and networking function for partners in the region and beyond.
