Making the Early Warnings 4 All Initiative a Reality in Fragile and Vulnerable Contexts

  • Date
    04 Dec 2023, 10:30am
  • Location
    Climate Mobility Pavilion
  • Organizer

UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) & World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

Early Warnings for All (EW4All) sets the objective to ensure every person in the planet is protected by multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS) by 2027. This was motivated by the need to close the coverage gap, which currently is considerable with half of the global population lacking access to MHEWS. The gap is hardest felt in countries characterized by high vulnerability. More than half of the countries that are most vulnerable and least ready to adapt to climate change are affected by conflict, violence, and instability (referred to as Fragile, Conflict, Violence- FCV contexts). As such, if we are to be successful in achieving EW4All, it is imperative to develop tailored solutions for FCV contexts. For more information, please find the Policy Brief on PreventionWeb or below for download: https://www.preventionweb.net/publication/early-warning-systems-and-early-action-fragile-conflict-and-violent-contexts-addressing

To this end, the event will:

  1. Showcase the diversity of EWS across FCV contexts,
  2. Present the Considerations for Early Warning Systems / Early Action (EWS/EA) for FCVs as a framework to scale-up climate action, and
  3. Foster linkages to finance to accelerate EW4All in FCVs.

The event will discuss a proposed framework for collective and common action in FCVs to scale-up MHEWS coverage linked to suited financing options.
