Climate change compels millions of people to face the risk of being displaced due to more frequent and severe droughts, storms, floods, and other weather-related hazards. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the United Nations University (UNU) partnered to create a unique model using the CLIMADA platform that projects how many people might be internally displaced in the future through climate impacts.
This side event will present the results of this innovative project and will discuss more broadly ongoing efforts to model future weather-related displacement. The event will start with a panel discussion where the experts will break down the model’s approach and the data used, and will present a case study from small Pacific island states to illustrate the model’s application and insights. It will be followed by an interactive discussion, where participants will be invited to submit their questions to panelists using Mentimeter.
The session is about sparking conversation and collaboration. We will hear from climate change and migration professionals amongst the participants, gather new ideas and explore how our approach can be used by others to better understand and address the challenges of addressing displacement in a changing climate. Moreover, the session will provide room for voices from policymakers and negotiators to ensure that our model meets their needs for information on climate risk and human mobility.
