Climate change is responsible for losses and damages that threaten stability and people’s dignity. It is worsening the daily realities of the most disadvantaged globally, is endangering lives and is forcing people out of their homes and communities in search of work, shelter and a better life.
Communities obliged to move because of climate change impacts’ s are facing difficulties both on their journeys and once they arrive at their destination. The journeys are often perilous and put migrants and displaced peoples at risk of trafficking, malnutrition, health problems, violence and more. Women and young girls are particularly vulnerable to gender-based violence. Meanwhile, a lack of preparedness measures at the destination and the complexity of the legal frameworks (especially when national borders are crossed) makes the destination equally perilous.
This session will share with the participants evidence from the frontlines of displacement in the context of climate change. It will also explore with participants the immediate actions needed to protect lives and safeguard dignity in situations of displacement.
