The Government of the Philippines and the International Organization for Migration, in collaboration with the Migrants in Countries in Crisis Initiative (MICIC), invite you to a panel discussion on Building the Resilience of Migrants in Disaster Situations, with the participation of speakers from the Governments of Bangladesh and the Philippines, a representative of a Civil Society Organization in Japan and a professor of the University of Auckland in New Zealand. The panel will be moderated by IOM’s Director General, Ambassador William Lacy Swing.

MICIC is a State-led undertaking seeking to improve the ability of States and, where relevant, other stakeholders, to prepare for, respond to, alleviate suffering, and protect the dignity and rights of migrants caught in countries in situations of acute crisis – either civil unrest or natural disasters.  The initiative aims to develop non-binding global guiding principles and effective practices through a series of multi-stakeholder consultations over the course of the next 15 months, in recognition of the particular and specific vulnerabilities of this non-national population.

This panel will offer an opportunity for governments, international organizations, academia, employers and other private sector actors, migrant groups and other civil society actors to discuss openly, share experiences, expertise and good practices on how to improve the access of migrants to information before and during disasters, relief and recovery assistance, and in general to better include them in DRR and DRM efforts.
