As part of the rollout of the Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) strategy of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in West and Central Africa (WCA), the IOM office of Senegal, in collaboration with the IOM Regional office for WCA and the IOM Headquarters, delivered a workshop, in the context of the project “Enhancing the capacity of IOM staff to mainstream environment and climate change within the wider framework of Migration Management in West and Central Africa – Senegal as a concrete example”.
The purpose of this training was to strengthen IOM’s expertise and capacity in supporting local and national institutions of the WCA region in order to address MECC challenges. Thus, it reunited national and international experts to share knowledge and relevant good practices on different themes ; agroecology, agroforestry, green works and jobs, local governance and environmental migration funding mechanisms. It also generated ideas and key priorities that shaped the development of MECC global guidelines and established regional mission’s MECC action points for 2020.
Hence, the training achieved several goals, namely building a shared understanding of the MECC challenges and opportunities, identifying and sharing effective practices by analyzing WCA experiences, helping IOM country offices in acquiring expertise and a strategic vision in order to address the MECC challenges, identifying main issues regarding fundraising, strengthening IOM MECC partnership portfolio and enhancing the coordination between Headquarters, WCA Regional office and Country offices.
